You can actually ask for an itemized statement of supposed damages, and you should always take pictures of the apartment before you leave.

Take pictures of everything you can when you first move in. Get an itemized sheet of all that wrong during walk through. Take pictures at the end too. I’ve gotten money back every time. 100%.

You are correct, but the walk-through is done a month or two before and then again the day before you move out.

This must be why our building charges a move in fee but not a deposit. 👀

Even better, take pics the day you move in, document all damage then do the same the day you move out. Send them this document as proof.

Yes. Walk-through together, ask for receipts for anything taken, and download timestamp the day you walk out of that place, and record what it looks like.documentation matters.watch what u sign too.

If you don’t trust your landlord, and since deposits are typically a months rent, one time I just didn’t pay the last month, emailed and said that my deposit would be put towards that.

There is no excuse for a landlord to not return your deposit within 30 days minus any damages proven with an invoice. Not all banks give interest.

I know so many people who never get their deposit back, yet it’s also the norm for people to walk through their apartment to clean it.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't a security supposed to go into an escrow account? So that way, it does gain interest, and it is your money, so....

Please also let people know that many states have a treble damages law. If you go to court and win, the landlord would owe you three times the security deposit, but you have to ask for it!

If you're not getting it back or getting stonewalled, start an email chain for records, and you can move toward civil court (have a lawyer write them a letter on your behalf; they'll cough it up)

I have yet to get all of my security deposit back. They claim some of it was used to clean the place and would take small claims court to recoup it all.
