Took down my hot take video on Issey Miyake’s Pleats Please. A 30 second rant is not enough for this subject, which left many people hell-bent on having different discussions, or attacking me personally. I do not want to make people feel bad about clothes that they like, or introspect unnecessarily on their bodies. However, I do care about how modern fashion brands tackle fit- as a concept. I maintain that Pleats Please/Issey Miyake often looks ill-fitting, careless, and unintentional- even in their own campaigns, and when styled by their biggest resellers. Why? They are a very mature brand that for years has asked us to ignore fit. Their sizing charts do not represent the customers shopping the clothes, and yet we are eager to uphold this as a luxury brand that can do no wrong. Essentially, it’s stretched too far. I find this interesting, and have written a Substack article about it if you’d like to know my thoughts in further detail.
