It belongs to the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and is frequently chosen for its efficacy and relatively favorable side-effect profile. Although primarily used to treat major depressive disorder, sertraline is also prescribed for a range of other mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). The medication typically takes several weeks to reach its full therapeutic effect, often around 4 to 6 weeks. This delay can be challenging for patients, as initial side effects may occur before significant symptom relief is experienced. Common side effects include nausea, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, and dizziness, although these are generally mild and diminish over time. Discontinuation syndrome is a potential issue when stopping sertraline, particularly if it is done abruptly. Symptoms of this syndrome can include dizziness, irritability, nausea, and sensory disturbances.
