Back to making, throwing bowls with clay that’s arguably FAR too soft, hence the saving motion used about halfway through this video, where, as the bowl was slumping down too much, I hoist it up from all around back into a more manageable shape. Soft clay means these can be thrown in a minute, max, but it also means I’m fighting constantly with the clay to stop it collapsing — I also don’t spend much time centring, which I should, but I’d rather thrown these quickly and roughly and then spend more time focused on the trimming. This perhaps isn’t the base pottery advice but it works for me. I like throwing but prefer turning, and if I can get away throwing tiny bowls like this then I will. As the walls are drawn up, they are a bit wonky, they undulate and the throwing rings are quite prominent, yet, once the rim meets the pointer I shove all the clay firmly against a kidney, rounding the interior shape, and the rim, if it is a slightly uneven, (thicker on one side, thinner on the other), I’ll squeeze it between my fingers until it runs true and chamois leather it until it’s perfectly smooth. When spinning you might notice some asymmetry, but as soon as the wheel stops your eye ceases to notice any lop-sidedness. #bowl #tableware #craft #satisfying #asmr #WIP #howitsmade
