🚨 WHEN A PUBLIC POST BECOMES A “PROBLEM”… LET’S TALK ABOUT IT. 🚨 I won’t lie… sometimes the actions of a few can make people question the entire institution. Today, I received a call from Constable Desley Figaro regarding a flyer that was publicly posted by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service on May 10th, 2017. The concern? That I didn’t have permission to repost it. That only the TTPS could share it. But here’s the question: What law says a member of the media cannot repost a publicly released TTPS publication while reporting on a matter of public interest? Let’s be clear: The flyer was not leaked. It was not hacked. It was not stolen. I did not create it. It was publicly posted by the TTPS. As a media practitioner, my job is to ask questions, investigate, verify information, and report matters that are in the public interest. And let me make this very clear: The post did NOT accuse Constable Desley Figaro of any crime. It did NOT allege he was involved in any criminal activity. It did NOT make any defamatory claim against him. So the question remains… Why contact a member of the media and suggest something is illegal without pointing to the law that was broken? The Copyright Act Chap. 82:80 does not mean every discussion, report, or commentary involving publicly released material is automatically unlawful. The Constitution of Trinidad and Tobago, Section 4(i) protects freedom of expression, including the communication of information and opinions. The media must be allowed to do its job. If there is a genuine legal issue, there are proper legal channels. But nobody should be spreading misinformation about what journalists can and cannot publish. The public deserves transparency.
