Slow and steady wins the race… to a just topped up water trough! Elephants have walked this earth for millennia. These giants have a deep wisdom that’s difficult to fathom, but one thing is clear, they know the importance of conserving energy when it’s hot and dry. As Tsavo moves deep into the dry season, the rescued orphan elephants at our Voi Reintegration Unit know there’s no need to race to the water trough. Whilst water is a precious resource at this time of year, our Water for Wildlife program ensures there is a supply available to the orphans – and wild visitors of all species – at each of our units. That’s not all, we have drilled boreholes throughout the ecosystem, powered by solar or wind, they pump water into specifically made troughs – with overflows to create mud wallows. From birds to buffaloes to mighty tuskers, all are welcome to take their fill. These water points fulfil another purpose too; human-wildlife conflict mitigation. As food and water become scarcer, animals look beyond the borders of protected areas into neighbouring community lands, where they might find food (in the form of crops!) and water tanks. These incursions can have devasting consequences for people and wildlife! The provision of water within Tsavo helps encourage elephants and other species to stay in this protected area.
