Among the many questions I receive, one of the most frequent is, "How did you teach Michael to use ASL?" Teaching Michael ASL involved several crucial steps. Beyond developing and nurturing the fine motor skills required to form the signs—skills that need consistent and persistent practice—the very first and most critical step was establishing a solid foundation of joint attention. Joint attention is the ability to focus on an object or activity with another person, which is essential for effective communication and learning. By ensuring that Michael could engage in joint attention, we created a shared space where he could observe, imitate, and understand the signs we were teaching him. This foundational skill allowed him to connect with us and his environment through ASL. We incorporated activities and games that encouraged eye contact, turn-taking, and shared focus to build joint attention. These interactions helped Michael understand the social aspects of communication, making it easier for him to pick up ASL.
