you often don't have enough crew to cover all the flights coming in at of a evening/night example your assigned to 3 flights at same time on a 3 maybe 4 man team to speed up the process this happens.

This explains why passengers don't want their luggage in the hold. My friend's case arrived 2 days after he landed & it was split down one side.
