A SENSORY CUE THAT MAY HELP SOME SINGERS 🎤 One cue I sometimes use is imagining a buzzing sensation around the junction of the hard and soft palate. This isn’t about physically “placing” the voice there. Sound is generated by the vocal folds and shaped by the acoustics of the vocal tract. Instead, I’m using the palate as a sensory reference point. Some singers find that directing their attention towards this area helps them recognise the vibrotactile sensations associated with a more focused, resonant sound—without trying to manufacture resonance by squeezing or pushing. And that’s the important caveat: it’s a cue, not an anatomical rule. It may work brilliantly for one singer and do absolutely nothing for another. Good teaching is about finding the sensory language that helps each individual coordinate their instrument. We aren’t putting the voice somewhere.
