By offloading some of the workload to the edge, you can make decisions locally instead of in centralized servers to help reduce latency and bandwidth. On Catalyst switches like the 9300 and 9400, you can host applications directly on the switch. Typically, I see monitoring apps like WireShark or ThousandEyes being hosted.
