@digital.byte: Why would you host an application on a switch? (and more importantly, should you??) Use cases such as: Smart grids Smart traffic lights Industrial IoT devices Autonomous vehicles Mobile gaming devices Retail analytics cameras Content delivery networks In-hospital patient monitoring Predictive maintenance sensors Virtualised radio networks and 5G (vRAN) Energy grid management devices Public transportation systems Augmented reality headsets Smart farming equipment Predictive maintenance Healthcare wearables Autonomous vehicles Smart home systems Security systems Cloud gaming Drones All require low latency decision making. By offloading some of the workload to the edge, you can make decisions locally instead of in centralized servers to help reduce latency and bandwidth. On Catalyst switches like the 9300 and 9400, you can host applications directly on the switch. Typically, I see monitoring apps like WireShark or ThousandEyes being hosted. But the options are endless! What would you host on your switch? P.S. Would you ever host AI on your switch?? 🧐 #informationtechnology #networking #networkengineer #apphosting #edgecompute #technology

Would it be able to monitor stuff ON the switch? I see a lot of automation opportunities 🤔

Thousandeyes has some requirements that the sales people do not explain. How do the switches need to have access to the internet

Huh. Always knew the ‘Edge’ term but never quickly understood what it is. Now I do! Thank you so much!

Could be interesting for load balancing. Does it support eBPF?

Many compliance frameworks say “single purpose” systems. Consider the battle it might be to explain apps on a switch. I’m not saying don’t do it, just keep your eyes open.

I'm curious to hear other applications outside of Cisco Apps? are there many businessness that use off the shelf apps to place on their switches?

Monitoring, sure. But this is a risky game and should not be understated. To the viewers, how much do you trust X networking company? Is it enough to run arbitrary apps on the networking equip? Nah.
