I learned in my criminal law class recently, regardless of if a place is public, the second a person owning that public place tells you to leave, that legally becomes trespassing if you do not leave. At least in the state of Texas

Signing in as just “Good Samaritan” would already throw a red flag and cause them to investigate so that would immediately give probable cause to ask for ID and eventually asked to leave. Also, signing in to enter already proves you have to show ID of some kind to enter. These auditors love to stir the pot

you can still trespass in a public place because “public” doesn’t mean you have unlimited rights to be there. it just means the space is generally open to people under certain conditions. privately owned places are open to the public but can still ask you to leave, and if you refuse, that becomes trespassing. you’re allowed in public spaces only as long as you follow the rules and leave when you’re told to.

If policy is to sign in, you can give false information. That is a crime. He doesn't have to sign in, but giving fake name is the issue here. Even if they aren't formulating it properly, that is still how it is.
