@accessiblearthistory: Peter Paul Rubens is one of the most prolific painters in history. According to art historian Michael Jaffé, his catalog stands at 1,403 pieces. That isn’t counting copies made in his workshop or oil sketches like today’s featured work. This oil sketch features The Coronation of the Virgin and dates from around 1623. Even though it isn’t a finished work, we can still see Rubens’ characteristic flowing composition and dramatic expressions. . . . Although this is just an oil sketch, it is almost more personal than a completed painting. The viewer can see Rubens’ thought process, how he picked the colors, the number of cherubs, etc. It is so fascinating to see the way that this Baroque master worked! Sadly, the final composition was destroyed in Berlin during the bombings of World War II. Thankfully, this piece is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art where it can still be enjoyed today. . . . #arthistory #accessiblearthistory #peterpaulrubens #metmuseum #baroque #meteuropeanpaintings #arthistorytiktok
