So to be clear, Spain is the outlier. Vermouth is a fortified wine, somewhat similar to sherry. Some places only use it as a mixer in cocktails. Some drink it on its own, generally on the rocks… /1

vermouth is just not drunk as a stand alone in the Netherlands. i very much associate vermouth drinking with Spain.

Vermut in Spain is a cocktail with wine, vermouth, and aromatics. Vermouth is a strong liquor. Could be easily confused since they sound similar
