Do You Suffer From Sciatica? Last week we looked at one of the most common causes of sciatic symptoms that we see in clinic – Bulging / Prolapsed Discs. This week we’re exploring another common cause of sciatica symptoms that we regularly see at TherapyFit: 🔴 Piriformis Syndrome Many people automatically assume that sciatica must be coming from their lower back, but that’s not always the case. 👉 Sciatica is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The piriformis is a small muscle located deep within the buttock. Its job is to help stabilise and rotate the hip. The sciatic nerve runs underneath this muscle (and in some people, through it). When the piriformis becomes tight, irritated or inflamed, it can place pressure on the sciatic nerve and produce symptoms very similar to those experienced with a disc problem. Common symptoms include: ✅ Pain deep in the buttock ✅ Pain travelling down the back of the leg ✅ Tingling or pins and needles ✅ Numbness in the leg or foot ✅ Pain when sitting for long periods ✅ Discomfort when walking uphill or climbing stairs ✅ Tenderness within the buttock region One of the biggest challenges with sciatica is that symptoms from Piriformis Syndrome can often mimic those caused by a Bulging or Prolapsed Disc, which is why a professional assessment is so important. In this post we explain: 📌 What Piriformis Syndrome is 📌 How it affects the sciatic nerve 📌 Common symptoms 📌 How it differs from disc-related sciatica 📌 Who is most at risk 📌 Typical recovery timeframes 📌 Exercises that may help recovery The key to successful treatment is identifying the true cause of your symptoms rather than simply treating the pain. If you’ve missed Part 1, head back to our previous post where we discuss Bulging / Prolapsed Discs and Sciatica. 👍 Like 💾 Save 📤 Share ➕ Follow @TherapyFit for more injury, rehabilitation and recovery advice #Sciatica #SportsMassage #BackPainRelief #ClinicalMassage #Rehabilitation
