@earthrise.studio: If you venture into the Black Country town of Smethick, 4 miles west of Birmingham, you’ll soon encounter a vibrant allotment community of Sikh men and women who, like their ancestors in the Punjab region of India, maintain a deep relationship with the land through cultivating and harvesting crops. ”Grass Roots” is a photography book by South London-based artist and community photographer @Hark1karan who has been exploring Punjabi and Sikh life as well as the diverse facets of London culture through photography for the last decade. The allotment community featured in his latest project is made up of Punjabi Sikhs who settled in the Midlands for work in the 1960s and 70s. Many of them are now retired, and come here to grow anything from food to flowers. It’s an incredibly unique space, complete with bathtubs that collect rainwater and decorated sheds which double up as a social space to spend time alone or with friends.
