As a pedestrian it is akward, but when you think about it as a driver, you have right of way, they are required to stop so from the drivers perspective stoping and waiting for you has the least risk.

I agree with you completely, but I was recently told by a friend whose mother is a judge (in LA) that drivers are supposed to stop for pedestrians at ANY corner, even if there’s no sign or crosswalk

At a crosswalk without a signal I would expect that but I was driving behind a guy who stopped in the middle of the road to let a pedestrian cross and had to slam on the brakes like!!!

Totally agree - it’s almost always more efficient if drivers just predictably follow the rules and let walkers/cyclists fit into that.

this is like a super common thing in scotland, like a car will stop to let you cross and most of the time (sometimes not though) the cars on the other side will also stop. but also scotland is very pedestrianised, and a lot of places especially in city centres also have one way roads so it's not like you really have to worry about the other side of the road

I hate this so much. I feel like it comes from small town / Midwestern drivers who are trying to do the polite thing but don't understand the importance of maintaining the flow of traffic

Also, pedestrians have now been trained to expect this behavior. sometimes they'll yell and shake their fist at you if you just drive by.

My mom did that for someone once and he screamed at her a flipped her off. Took me a couple years but I got it. I’m breaking the law here. Just carry on god damn it

Once your in the street another car will usually stop in the other direction. I prefer this, it also promotes a more pedestrian conscious culture.

this KILLS me everytime! It happens driving too! same situation but it's someone with right of way who stops in a through lane and eff's it all up for everybody. it ruins my whole day too
