IIRC it was also incredibly hard to get in and out of the suits. Something like 30 mins and they needed 1 or 2 people to help

It wasn’t just Speedo. Other companies got into super-suits & an arms race began. At 2009 World Cup, Paul Biederman beat Phelps & Phelps threatened to quit if the suits weren’t banned by FINA.

my boys used to swim and certain meets allowed "tech suits" which allowed them to shave .01 of seconds off, which would be the difference between qualifying or not.
