@drsermedmezherexplains: “I Could Be an Olympic Athlete” #wait. Breath-holding exercises are a valuable tool for enhancing lung capacity and improving overall respiratory health. These exercises, often practiced in disciplines such as freediving, yoga, and certain breathing techniques, involve holding the breath for progressively longer periods, which trains the respiratory system and increases lung efficiency. Increasing Lung Capacity: Regular practice of breath-holding exercises can lead to several physiological adaptations that contribute to increased lung capacity: Strengthening Respiratory Muscles: Holding the breath requires the engagement of diaphragm and intercostal muscles, which over time strengthens them and improves their ability to expand and contract the lungs more effectively. Enhancing Oxygen Utilization: These exercises improve the body's ability to use oxygen more efficiently by increasing the number and efficiency of alveoli, the tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs. Improving Tolerance to CO2: By holding the breath, the body becomes better at tolerating higher levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), which can help in managing breathlessness and improving overall endurance. Sign of Respiratory Health: Successfully performing breath-holding exercises can indicate good respiratory health and function. Indicators of improved lung capacity and respiratory efficiency include: Longer Breath-Hold Times: Increased ability to hold the breath for extended periods reflects improved lung capacity and oxygen utilization. #Fitness #exercise #health

I was a swimmer as a kid. At 55, and not exercising regularly, I can still hold my breath for a minute.

I probably could have held it all the way but i chose to breathe at 3/4 of the way. I just find holding my breath really scary as someone with health anxiety 😅 but i wasnt out of breath.
