1881 - La Rochelle Museum of Fine Arts (France) Next to Richelieu are his military staff, among whom is Father Joseph ("éminence grise" of the Cardinal). A bit more context (hoping I didn’t get anything wrong) : King Louis XIII and his chief minister, Cardinal Richelieu, were worried about the growing influence of the Protestant religion in France, especially the Huguenots. These Protestants were protected by the Edict of Nantes and had strongholds like the city of La Rochelle, where they held political meetings against the King's wishes. La Rochelle was a powerful port that traded with Protestant England, a country always looking to weaken France. Richelieu feared that the Huguenots were creating a "state within a state", so he decided to weaken their power by attacking La Rochelle. The leader of the Protestant forces was the Duke of Rohan, who called for help from England. The English, led by the Duke of Buckingham, tried to support La Rochelle by landing troops nearby. The city's mayor, Jean Guitton, was determined to fight and swore to kill anyone who surrendered. Richelieu led the siege himself, surrounding the city with a 12-kilometer trench and 20,000 soldiers. A 1,500 meters long and 8 meters wide dike was also built in the sea to block supplies. Despite three failed attempts by the English to break through and strong resistance from the city's defenders, La Rochelle surrendered on October 28, 1628. Out of the 28,000 people in the city before the siege, only 5,500 survived. The Huguenots lost most of their political, military, and territorial rights, but the King allowed them to continue practicing their religion to avoid a larger civil war. #arttok #art #painting #arttiktok #arthistory
