There was a time when I genuinely *dreaded* presenting evaluation results. I would sit there moving from score to score, slowly starting to feel like the teacher from Charlie Brown as I watched the family’s eyes begin to glaze over. And I couldn’t blame them. I was asking them to take in a LOT of technical information, make sense of what it meant for their child, and somehow remember the most important parts after the meeting ended. (And this was even after I had reviewed information on the phone before the meeting). I knew there had to be a better way. So, over the years, I tried a little bit of everything: A bell curve with strengths and needs written underneath. A separate table with all the scores. Highlighted sections of my report. And, occasionally, a drawing I created right there in the meeting that made perfect sense at the time. 😂 Each approach helped with one piece, but I was still handing families several different papers and hoping they could put the bigger picture together. Then a Resource Drive member sent me a request that pushed me to finally take all of those approaches and turn them into one cohesive, two page Evaluation Summary Sheet. One page holds the story behind the scores: strengths, areas needing support, important findings, real-life connections, and next steps. The other gives families a visual place to see the scores and where they fall. It’s the tool I wish I had when I was sitting in those early meetings, trying so hard to explain everything clearly and realizing that more information didn’t always create more understanding. And my favorite part? You can edit the whole thing for your own use. Because the one thing about our roles? They vary from one state/district to another. My goal is for our tools to always make life easier and connect directly to your work! If you’d like to use it in your own evaluation meetings, comment SUMMARY and I’ll send you the link! Let me know in the comments...what is a strength you have seen from students during testing that people would never know from the scores alone? . . #schoolpsych #schoolpsychologist #schoolpsychology #specialed #IEP
