How many times have you stayed silent (shut down), when someone hurt your feelings or crossed your boundaries? How many times have you ignored someone's behavior or tone towards you because you didn't want the discomfort of an argument or disagreement? How many times have you played out conversations inside your head but never dared to say the words out loud? Does it feel easier to say silent and pretend you are perfectly fine? Truth is: Maybe it is temporarily easier but by continuously avoiding our true feelings, minimizing ourselves, our needs and boundaries we suffer needlessly and eventually learn to silence ourselves. Often it's been learned and adapted as a way of coping towards our caregivers who might have told you your feelings and options are wrong or were not acknowledged and seen altogether. Maybe speaking up had caused you a lot of conflict moments (or even physical abuse) growing up and you learned staying silent was the best way to avoid trauma from happening again. Here is a goute I read a while ago which I find very on point: "If you avoid conflict to keep the peace, you start a war with yourself." ➡️As a first step you could try to practice saying the words aloud. Say them in front of the mirror, or practice with someone you really trust. The more you practice, the more natural it will feel and become. ➡️Make a list of the reasons why you want to speak up for yourself. Pick the top three, and either write them down somewhere visible, or try memorize them. #Relationship #arguments #childhoodtrauma #emotions #MentalHealth
