@packleaderdogs: This is a clear example of a stressed out Dachshund who is resource guarding his owners. Dachshund owners will tell you this is "a Dachshund thing." I completely disagree. This is a dog behavior thing that happens to be a Dachshund doing it. I've worked with many dogs who resource guard their owners of all different breeds, including Dachshunds. While certain breeds may be more prone to guarding behavior or react more intensely than other breeds, resource guarding is NOT a breed trait. The real problem here is the relationship and the lack of leadership that the owner fails to provide this Dachshund. Trauma in the dog world is something that is not talked about enough. It's not really talked about ir understood in the human world, so it's understandable why it's not discussed with dogs. Dogs have an instinctual need to follow a calm and confident leader who provides protection, direction, and love. Much like a child has a need for attachment to a healthy parent who provides the same. When that is not provided to a dog or a child, it means a need is not being met, which can wound a dog or child. Inner wound = Trauma. Most people think of trauma as a BIG event that's obvious, but most don't realize that a dog or child not having a need met can be traumatic. It could be as simple as being scared and not having a leader/parent-figure to help you with that feeling. This owner is failing to provide direction by calmly but firmly disagreeing with this behavior. It's also highly likely that this owner doesn't provide leadership in other areas, which has led to this dog being fearful and insecurely taking the lead in the relationship. The more this happens, the more stressed out and out of balance this dog will become. Again, this is not a Dachshund issue. This is a relationship issue, and the dog is reacting normally in dog behavior given the lack of leadership. Thoughts?

It’s horrifying how so many people can see a dog exhibit this behavior and think it’s funny/entertaining. That dog is baring his teeth as far back as his lips go.
