Candles have been lit at the spot where a 24-year-old influencer was shot dead, while live streaming in front of a fast-food restaurant in Mexico. Footage shows César Gastélum live streaming with his friends outside KFC on the Kick streaming platform. He is then approached by two people wearing helmets on a motorcycle, and one of them shot him directly in the head. Gastelum was a Mexican social media influencer, who had more than 650,000 followers on TikTok, and would regularly post comedy skits layered over Mexican regional music. He at times referred to himself in his videos as “bélico,” a term often used in subcultures in Mexico to imply a connection to cartel culture. Mexico’s Federal Security Cabinet is investigating whether his content alluded to a specific “criminal group.” Sinaloa, where the influencer was murdered, has in recent years been a place of conflict between two factions of the Sinaloa Cartel called the ‘Los Mayos’ and ‘Los Chapitos.’ Los Mayos would reportedly leave behind a sombrero, and it soon became dangerous to wear the hats in Culiacan as it could signify allegiance to one group. On Tuesday night, Gastélum was filmed wearing a white sombrero before the incident. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum told journalists during a morning news conference on Wednesday that the “perpetrators must be arrested.” “We must find out why this deplorable homicide occurred,” she said.
