🌱 Welcome to My New Series! Cooking with Indigenous initiative: Nai Miris & Basilicum Coconut Sambal 🌿🔥🥥 The reason I’m working with this initiative is because I’m super passionate about native farming methods in Sri Lanka and sustainable living. I try to eat organic, seasonal food as much as possible, and when I came across July from the Indigenous Initiative, I was deeply inspired by her story. They are working on opening the farm to the public soon—stay tuned! In the meantime, let’s dive into a recipe that highlights these incredible indigenous flavors. 🌿 July’s Story A year ago, while staying at Naveen’s villa, we realized our shared passion for protecting natural habitats. He introduced me to indigenous farming, and I was struck by how monocrop farming and excessive pesticide use were harming the environment and our health. This initiative is about re-educating and re-inspiring local farmers to embrace indigenous techniques while also teaching foreigners to respect this biodiversity hotspot. By showcasing sustainable farming, we hope to create a ripple effect that restores balance to the land and communities. July grew up in a farming family, surrounded by the knowledge of indigenous agriculture passed down through generations. But over the years, she watched as modern farming methods—driven by chemicals and monocropping—replaced these sustainable techniques. Determined to preserve the wisdom of her ancestors, she started working with local farmers, helping them transition back to organic, indigenous farming. Her goal? To restore the land, protect biodiversity, and create a sustainable model for future generations. Now, the Indigenous Initiative is working on opening the farm to the public, where people can learn, experience, and connect with these ancient traditions. Stay tuned! In the meantime, let’s celebrate indigenous flavors with this delicious sambal! 🌶 Nai Miris & Basilicum Coconut Sambal Ingredients: 🔸 2 cups grated coconut (frozen works if abroad) 🔸 10-15 shallots 🔸 3 Nai Miris (adjust for spice) 🌶 🔸 10-15 curry leaves 🔸 3-4 garlic cloves 🔸 1 lime or 2-3 Narang juice 🔸 10 black pepper pods 🔸 1 tsp Maldive fish chips (optional) 🔸 1-2 tsp chili powder 🔸 Salt to taste 🔸 3-4 basilicum leaves (trust me 😉) Method: 1️⃣ First, bash (or blend) black pepper, Maldive fish, and garlic. 2️⃣ Add shallots, curry leaves, chili powder, salt, and basil leaves—bash again. 3️⃣ Once mixed well, add grated coconut and keep bashing. 4️⃣ Squeeze in Narang or lime juice, mix well by hand, and enjoy! A fiery, aromatic sambal that embodies the richness of indigenous ingredients! 🔥 Try it and let me know what you think. #IndigenousInitiative #SustainableFarming #EatLocal #RespectTheLand #SriLanka #srilankanfoodie #srilankanfoodblogger #dutchfoodblogger #srilankan_tik_tok🇱🇰 #IslandLife #ahangama #SriLankanFood #srilankancurry #AuthenticSriLanka #polsambola #coconutsambal #colombo
