reminds me of when i told my party the riddle "beauty (a lost artifact) is in the eye of the beholder" and they set out to find one when i meant for them to get the fake eye of the local beekeeper.

"you all wake up in the inn but it seems eerily quiet. it seems like it must've been a TERRIBLE DREAM." wait for them to go outside "where the city once was, you only see what's left of the foundations, crumbling away. as the final member of your party steps out, what's left of the inn collapses into dust, the foundation sinking into the earth" they can check their map and see that the location no longer appears there. if they attempt to recall the city, make a history check. if they succeed, there never was a city there
