I always tell myself I need to apply more of these subtle, decorative lines onto my pots. It’s a simple process fundamentally, yet attaching it carefully so that it doesn’t warp the pot is crucial. It’s for that reason I brace the opening with a bowl pressed into it, it keeps the rim circular as the coil of stoneware is slipped in place and delicately blended in. Once the base vase form is trimmed, I let it sit for 30-minutes or so before I join this protrusion, because as the outer layers of stoneware are carved back, softer clay on the inside is revealed, which means that if I were to attempt to affix this line immediately, the chance the walls would deform is greater, I sometimes even give it a quick blast with a heat-gun, (paint stripper), just to harden it up slightly. The most important part though, is drying the vessel slowly thereafter. If I were to attach this line and blend it beautifully in so that it’s sharp and crisp, if left uncovered to dry it would crack off, especially where the line comes to a point in the centre of those angled planes. Thereafter it’s covered in plastic and hidden for a few days and it’s this slow drying that makes all the difference. #vase #handmade #crafts #ceramic #studiopottery #satisfying #trimming
