Colt Gray and his father, Colin Gray, made their first court appearances on Friday at Georgia's Barrow County Superior Court to face charges related to a fatal shooting at Apalachee High School on Wednesday, which left four people dead. Colt, 14, is being tried as an adult, while Colin Gray faces four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of child cruelty, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). During the hearing, Judge Currie M. Mingledorff II informed Colt that he would not face the death penalty due to his age, with his preliminary hearing set for December 4. Colin Gray, who faces a potential 180-year sentence if convicted, was told his hearing will also be on December 4. Both father and son currently have temporary legal representation and are expected to hire new counsel later today. Neither is seeking bond at this time. **Gun Investigation** Authorities are investigating whether the AR-style weapon allegedly used in the shooting was purchased by Colin Gray and gifted to Colt.
"These charges are based on Mr. Gray knowingly allowing his son, Colt, to possess a firearm," said Chris Hosey, GBI director, during a Thursday evening news briefing. The Wednesday shooting resulted in the deaths of 14-year-old students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, along with educators Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie. Nine others, including two teachers and seven students, were injured but are expected to fully recover. **Prior Warnings** A police report from Jackson County, Georgia, revealed that in May 2023, Discord users alerted the FBI about a potential school shooting threat. The FBI investigated and identified Colt Gray, then 13, as a possible suspect. Investigators interviewed both Colt and his father, who denied any wrongdoing. Colin claimed that the guns in their home were secure, and Colt denied making the threats. Screenshots from Discord showed that a user with a Russian username resembling the name "Lanza," possibly referencing Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza, had made threatening posts. However, the FBI ultimately could not substantiate the claims against Colt or his father. **New Legal Precedents** While parental prosecutions in school shootings are rare, recent cases, like the conviction of Jennifer and James Crumbley, whose son committed the 2021 Oxford High School shooting, may set a precedent. Legal experts suggest that if it can be proven that Colt had unrestricted access to the weapon and his parents were aware of his violent behavior, Colin Gray could face conviction. President Biden also addressed the issue of gun safety on Thursday, stressing the importance of secure firearm storage and holding parents accountable if they fail to prevent access to guns. Authorities have yet to confirm how Colt acquired the weapon used in the shooting. #BreakingNews #GunControlNow #JusticeForVictims #TrueCrime #SchoolSafety #LegalNews #StopGunViolence #news #trending #viral #foryou #fyp
