You've got to consider how much passenger planes weigh with passengers.I'm sure several parachutes might slow a big play down but it would surely take more than one.

I did rough math, for a plane that is the size of a 747, depending on model, it would take about 8,800,000 sq ft of parachute, or 202 acres of parachute area
