Kamala Devi Harris born October 20, 1964 was born in California, the daughter of exceptionally-bright Doctoral students from India and Jamaica. Her mother was biomdical scientist and her father, a Stanford Jamaican-American economist. Her parents, both studying at the University of California, Berkeley, in the 1960s were mutually drawn to political and social activism. Her parents worked in a academia and moved throughout North America before returning to California in Harris’ childhood. Her parents separated as young girl; she and her younger-sister Maya, were raised predominantly by her mother. Kamala Harris, like her parents, has been a social and political advocate throughout her young-life. She studied political science and economics at Howard University, where she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA), a national black sorority. Soonafter graduating from Howard in 1986, Harris earned a law degree (1989) in California. She volunteered for Obama’s historic presidential-campaign in 2008. Kamala attributes tremendous success and resilience to her mother who passed away from colon cancer in 2009, one year before Kamala Harris was first elected attorney general. Kamala met her husband, Doug Emerhoff, a young Los Angeles attorney, in 2013 and the two married in 2014. In 2016, Harris ran for US senate and was elected Senator between 2017-2021. She ran for the Democratic presidential ticket in 2020 and, after Joe Biden was elected to the presidential ticket, he selected Kamala Harris to serve as his VP. Kamala Harris continues to serve as the current vice president of the United States. In July 2024 Kamala Harris, announced her presidential campaign against Donald Trump and JD Vance.
