@youthpastorryan: Did the USA launch a manhole cover into space? Probably not. Is it hilarious that we have historical documentation of one going 37 mps. Yes, yes it is. Enjoy the history of operation Plumbbob!
I love the idea of a manhole cover just hurtling through space though 😂

I know it’s impossible but I do enjoy the idea of our first contact with aliens being a manhole cover slicing through an alien ship

wasn't the manhole cover in like a single frame of the video?

Joseph Foran :
The manhole very likely did not vaporize. The sheer speed of exit would have kept it from being in atmo long enough and the one frame shows it intact at the point of highest pressure.

I vaguely remember hearing it wouldn't vaporize because of the gasses surrounding it and moving along with it for the part of its journey through the densest part of the atmosphere.

i wouldn't of had burnt up in the atmosphere because of how short of a time it spent in the air it was in the atmosphere for a second then in space

Whether it actually made it out into space or not, the idea that a manhole cover could hit an alien planet is just so funny

I will never not believe that manhole cover escaped. What I want to know is where it could be. Like, which star did we fling it at?

the cover was in one frame so we know it didn't vaporize

so that was actually the 2nd test iirc, @The Fat Electrician did a video on it if anyone's interested :)

Hundred of billions of years from now the manhole cover hits the other side of the earth after going around the interior universe 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I mean it also could have been going so fast that it literally didnt have time to vaporize before it was in space

Someone else covered it, but even at the speed of 37mph, low earth orbit is at a minimum of 100miles, meaning it took that manhole cover less than 3 seconds to make it to space. (1/2)

Well we know the manhole cover still existed for at least a fraction of a second after it was launched, it was caught on exactly ONE frame of film.

we did the test twice, the first time we didnt know. we measured it the second time. and the math says it could've gone fast enough to have been somewhat intact

So there are two schools of thought one that it burned up (lame and not entirely likely) 2 it was moving too fast to experience enough heat to burn up ok space 100km up cover 66km/s

I'm gonna :
there's a theory that it was actually moving so fast it didn't have time to heat up and vaporize before leaving earth. however it's just a theory and I have no idea about these things

300 miles a second is only a guess. It was likely going faster. It was only caught in one frame of the high speed camera. So they calculated the slowest it would have to been going.

If the manhole cover actually did make it to space it would be around 75 billion miles away

well considering it was traveling up and not down throught the atmosphere, if it was large enough I think it could make it and as the gravitational resistance lessens the faster ot will go.
