These furry con artists have learned that tourists can’t resist a good “damsel in distress” moment, but trust me—feeding them isn’t doing anyone a favor. This isn’t a Disney movie; it’s nature, and nature’s got rules. If you see a bear on Romania’s most iconic mountain road, keep driving. You’re not helping him out—you’re training him to beg. Romania is home to over 6,000 brown bears, making it one of Europe’s most bear-populated countries. Sadly, these encounters on the Transfăgărășan—once rare—are now almost guaranteed. But feeding the bears has consequences. They lose their fear of humans, which leads to more frequent and dangerous encounters. Not to mention, habituated bears often end up needing to be relocated or, worse, euthanized. Just last year, bear incidents in this region doubled, all thanks to tourists who can’t resist playing Mother Nature with their snacks. So, if you’re cruising the curves of the Transfăgărășan and spot a bear doing his best “woe is me” routine, resist the urge to stop.
