Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), the longest-serving party leader in Senate history, announced Thursday he will not seek reelection in 2026. “Representing our commonwealth has been the honor of a lifetime,” he said on the Senate floor. “I will not seek this honor an eighth time. My current term in the Senate will be my last.” The move comes as little surprise given that he’s made no indication of running for another term since announcing last year that he would step down from leadership in the 119th Congress. “Serving as Republican leader was a rare, and yes, rather specific childhood dream,” he said. “And just about a year ago, I thanked my colleagues for their confidence which allowed me to fulfill it.” Sen. McConnell was first elected to the Senate in 1984 and rose to become the most influential Republican of his generation to serve in the upper chamber. He became Republican whip in 2003 and leader of the GOP conference in 2007, a position he would hold for 18 years. The Kentucky Republican announced his retirement on his 83rd birthday. He has suffered a string of health issues in recent years, including multiple falls and freezing before reporters on several occasions. Sen. John Thune (R-SD), who succeeded him as Republican leader, called his predecessor’s legacy “one of remarkable service to the Senate, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and our nation.” “Over decades of tireless work, his mastery of Senate procedure, commitment to the institution, and dedication to the rule of law have shaped the course of American governance for generations to come,” he said in a statement. “Senator McConnell’s contributions will remain a lasting reflection of his steady vision, determination, and service to the country he loves.” #senate #mitchmcconnell #cspan
