NEARLY 240 MIGRANT WORKERS UNPAID — WHERE IS THE ACCOUNTABILITY? Nearly 240 migrant workers have reportedly gone without salaries for up to two months, while some allegedly paid as much as $12,000 to secure their jobs. These workers came to Singapore to earn an honest living and support their families. Instead, they are left waiting for wages they have already earned. To our highly paid ministers and the relevant authorities, I have some serious questions: Who is taking responsibility for this failure? How can nearly 240 workers go unpaid for up to two months without an effective intervention? Where is the urgent action? When exactly will these workers receive every dollar of their outstanding salaries? Who is protecting the workers? If some allegedly paid $12,000 to secure employment, what action is being taken to investigate these payments and protect them from exploitation? What happens if the company declares bankruptcy? Will these workers lose both their salaries and the money they paid to secure their jobs? Who will step in to protect their interests? Will those responsible face real consequences? Or will the workers bear the financial burden while those accountable escape responsibility? What are our ministers doing to prevent a repeat of this situation? What concrete safeguards will be introduced, and who will be held accountable if those safeguards fail? Hopefully, this will not become another case where a company declares bankruptcy and hardworking migrant workers are left with little or no chance of recovering their hard-earned money. Our ministers are among the highest-paid in the world. The public has every right to demand results, not merely statements of concern. If our system cannot protect workers when their wages are withheld, then we must ask a fundamental question: who is the system really protecting? These workers deserve their wages. They deserve justice. And they deserve clear answers — not silence, not delays, and certainly not excuses.
