Finishing up a crisis bowl made earlier in the week, grogged clay now refined to a vessel that feels as if shouldn’t be with such a material considering how light and fine it is.   I’m sure you’re all sick of seeing this red stoneware worked but not glazed and fired. I am too, but thankfully I’ll be moving onto glazing and firing everything really soon.   This red clay is a little deceptive at times in terms of when it can be trimmed. If I were to wait until the stage my normal clay is for trimming, this red stuff would be too firm to work with, the clay crumbling off in gritty chunks as compared to peeling off in lovely long ribbons like I’m used to.   Those keen eyed amongst you might notice some discolouration towards the tall foot of this bowl. I obviously didn’t mix the high-iron body into the coarse red stoneware very well. Annoyingly, I’ve made this mistake before but once glaze fired to cone ten, 1290ºC, the layer of crimson glass that’ll coat the vessel some a good job of evening out the differences. It’ll be more metallic on the red clay, whereas on the pink it turns a brighter, smoother tone. In reality though you’ll barely notice any difference and in a way, I rather like the subtle mark the marbling will leave.   #stoneware #clay #wheelthrownpottery #handmade #pottery #ceramic #potteryvideos
