This film is nothing to do with a far away planet and aliens, it’s the human story. I watched this film for the first time when I was 14. I was in Australia and I still hadn’t seen it, so the family I was staying with sent me over to their mates house who had sketchy Balinese copy and a cinema in their garage. I watched it by myself crying, but I didnt know why. Over the last few months ive been going back and watching the films that spoke to me a as kid and teenager to see what I was feeling but didn’t have the words to acknowledge. Avatar is on that list. But what I hadn’t appreciated was that Avatar is arguably the most successful film in history, it certainly is when it comes to Blockbuster sales alone. But why? Avatar depicts a story that happening on Earth right this second, which has been the dominant story for the last few thousand years of our history. A colonialist empire attempts to destroy an indigenous population and in doing so, not only destroys the earth but ultimately themselves. However, as a 14 year old I didnt logically know that. I mentioned I was in Australia for a reason. At that age, I didnt understand what it meant to be white in Australia, I didnt understand colonialism, I didnt understand that my people had taken that land from the First Nations Australians. But regardless, this film and story still spoke to me on a much deeper level. And to me thats why this film is so successful. I dont think everyone who watches Avatar is logically seeing the connections between our world and the Pandora world. And yet, it’s still one of the most successful films in history. We’re living in a colonist regime right now and even if our minds are protecting us from this notion, our hearts, bodies and collective subconsciousness are gravitating towards stories showing people deeply connected to each other and their ecosystem. No more than ever, it’s time to reclaim our indigineity and become stewards of our ecosystem once again. #youarefromhere #avatar #indigenous #colonialism
