This step in my journey was NOT easy & has taken about 6 1/2 years post-diagnosis to be able to do. Often times living with IH, we don’t tell ourselves the reality of our circumstances. Because society tells people who rest they’re lazy, we inevitably think this of ourselves if we choose to rest. I thought pushing through was the better option. “I have so much to do- so many things to get done” The reality is IH is a neurological sleep disorder. The excessive sleepiness we experience is not due to a ~lack~ of motivation or a ~desire~ to be unproductive or ‘lazy’. It’s not due to not getting enough sleep. It’s a legitimate & extremely real symptom that our brain is causing. It is not within our control. Once I had come to accept and really understand that my condition is the reason I need more sleep & rest compared to someone without a sleep disorder, I’ve found this to be an easier decision on how to best care for myself during these intense bouts/waves of excessive sleepiness. I no longer view it as ‘accepting defeat’, rather, I’m learning how to best support & love myself as I am. When I push myself through these waves, it often leads to a lot of frustration, irritability & brain fog. Most of the time I’m not able to actually even focus or do whatever it is I wanted to do/finish. I’m still a work in progress myself, however, I continuously am working to improve how I can best care for my needs everyday. This may seem like a small step but I’m choosing to celebrate the small wins. #idiopathichypersomnia #idiopathichypersomniaawareness #ihawareness #neurologicalsleepdisorder #invisibleillnesses #chronicsleepdisorder #excessivedaytimesleepiness #smallwins #smallwinsmatter
