Eddie Murphy Refused Drugs From Robin Williams & John Belushi In The 80's Comedy legend Eddie Murphy rose to fame fast. Joining "Saturday Night Live" at just 19 years old, he revitalized the show and became a movie star shortly after. Recalling his early days in a new interview with The New York Times, Murphy reflects on the dark side of sudden success, particularly the lure of drugs. "There I was, 19 years old, hanging out at the Blues Bar," Murphy remembers, referencing the famed Manhattan hangout. "It was just me, John Belushi, and Robin Williams. They offered me some coke, but I just said, 'No, I'm cool.' It wasn't some moral high ground, I just wasn't interested." Murphy emphasizes that his decision wasn't rooted in judgment. "Looking back," he says, "it feels like divine intervention. God was definitely watching over me that night." For Murphy, avoiding drugs wasn't just about personal preference. As a young Black comedian who single-handedly saved "SNL" and became a box office powerhouse with "Beverly Hills Cop," the stakes were high. "Being famous that young, especially as a Black artist, is like walking through a minefield," he explains. "Anything could set you off course. Everything was happening so fast, I didn't even realize it then. Now, I look back and think, 'Wow, I navigated that minefield for 35 years!'" While Murphy acknowledges a touch of luck, it's clear he was also keenly aware of his surroundings. He credits Elvis Presley as a major influence, with the leather jumpsuits from his iconic 80s standup routines inspired by the King himself. Presley's tragic death in 1977, heavily linked to drug use, wasn't lost on Murphy. The same went for John Belushi, who succumbed to an overdose just a few years after their encounter at the Blues Bar. "Those guys were all cautionary tales for me," Murphy reflects. "I don't even drink. The only drug I ever did was a single joint when I was 30 – that's the extent of it." #movies #throwback #80s #foryou
