🚨 Rare Footage Alert 🚨 Can you see how the rotifer’s inner fluids are being sucked into the tardigrade? 😳 I’ve rarely seen a water bear this hungry 😳 I was caught off guard so I rushed to get a clear image 😅 although you can see how I play with polarized illumination. I took off the Petri dish that I use to create colours and then readjusted the polarizing filter so only the mouth of the tardigrade would shine! How does one achieve the act of sucking inner fluids, you may wonder? The mouth of a water bear act as a small straw with two needles in it. The needles, called the stylets, pierce into the animal or plant material while the mouth sucks out the juice, the muscular pharynx then proceed to chew the food particles. Being as small as moss piglets means that specialized systems such as respiratory and circulatory systems are not needed. Instead of having lungs to breathe, respiration occurs through the cuticle and oxygen circulation is made possible by the movement of fluids and storage cells in the body. Storage cells look like small bubbles circulating around the body and following the movements of the water bear. These cells play a major role in nutrient transport and storage of lipids, sugars and pigments. Similar to humans and other mammals, water bears are able to store energy and use it when necessary. For example, stored energy can be used for reproduction purposes, like when development and maturation of eggs has come. Video taken with my iPhone mounted on a BA310E Motic microscope with an @ilabcam ultra adapter 🔬 References: Nelson, D. R., Guidetti, R., & Rebecchi, L. (2015). Phylum Tardigrada.
