@modernhomestead: Replying to @juggleplayz let's switch them up and see if it makes a difference, I'll test around with it and let you guys know what it does, I've got an update coming in the morning, I let the heater run all day today on medium, Wait till you see how hot the pool got... #modernhomestead #homestead #DIY #poolheater #pool #Summer #swimming #howto
flipping will make no difference. slower flow gives more time to exchange heat. or a longer coil.

I have used a 500 ft roll half inch poly not for a pool but for a spa approximately $60. you have the property why not build passive solar collector maybe then feet to this.

slowing the flow or adding coils. The idea is the longer the water spends in the heat the hotter it's going to come out the hose.

Engineer here, this is the basis of heat exchangers. OP is correct, that is the most efficient flow path.

throw some black tubing loops up on your roof and use solar

don't use a pump have the water go in around the heater and straight back out to the pool you won't need electricity you won't need nothing more than your copper set up and the heater

If you don’t use a pump then natural circulation by thermo siphon relies on heat out the top and cold in the bottom

Not really, the heater is inefficient as you aren’t capture all the lost or most of the lost heat. More smaller diameter pipe, so multiple coils with space between each coil will be better.

Dillyboy :
you have a fair amount of thermal loss with distance from the pool. less surface area to conduct heat will result in less heat loss. not sure why they said flipping hoses would do anything.

Did you put a heat spreader in the center of the coil to deflect some of the heat to the coil?

they meant, flip the hoses.

Heat rises, so filling the pool with the hose at the surface of the water you’re losing heat from the start! Put the fill hise at the bottom of the pool

You can buy a tankless hot water heater for a couple hundred dollars.

Chad GPT (TM) :
you don't want the water coming out hot. that means you're leaving energy in the heater and lines. you want to have enough flow for the temp so it comes out very warm.

you must live up north, down south the water is already 90 degrees by july

oh, hey, build an enclosure over & around you pool ! then you guys can swim longer into the years. maybe year around ♥️♥️♥️

You’re maxing out your gas input but there’s a limit to the heat the coil can take because of its size. Flipping the flow increases the efficiency meaning you DONT have to put the gas to max.

Throttle the valve for the hose down a bit. Slow the water down through the coil.

Feeding from the top isn’t about temperature. It is the max transfer of heat energy to the water. The cold water coming down has the greatest difference in temps. So the water will absorb more energy
