This is a "spearing" type of mantis shrimp. Unlike its "smasher" cousins that use blunt clubs, this one uses sharp, barbed appendages to impale soft-bodied prey like fish and shrimp in a blindingly fast strike. Its accuracy is all thanks to its eyes. Educational Fact: A mantis shrimp's eyes are so complex, they almost defy belief. Each of its independently moving eyes has trinocular vision, meaning it has three separate pupils focusing on the same object.
