It can be tempting to assert authority and tell them off. This is unlikely to elicit a good reaction and they’re likely to get defensive. Instead depending on the friendship I would recommend trying to talk to them in a non- accusatory way about how you’re feeling. Showing some vulnerability can help them understand your perspective. Asking someone for their help is a respectful way to position it as a problem to solve together. Let them know that your friendship is important to you and you respect them. And equally being a good manager is also important. This could sound like: “Our friendship is really important to me and I respect you a lot. Equally being a good manager to you and the team is important to me too” Share with them the specific behaviour that you’re uncomfortable with and then ask them how you can both switch into a more professional gear at work. For example: “Well when you say/do things like [INSERT] I feel really uncomfortable as the manager.
