The Failed 2014 Pilot: "How I Met Your Dad" In 2014, CBS attempted to capitalize on the success of How I Met Your Mother with a spinoff titled How I Met Your Dad. Created by HIMYM showrunners Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, along with Up All Night’s Emily Spivey, the series was envisioned as a fresh take on the original format. This time, the story would follow Sally, played by Greta Gerwig, as she navigates life after a breakup and shares the story of how she met her children’s father. Unlike How I Met Your Mother, which was told from a man’s perspective, How I Met Your Dad was designed to offer a female point of view on love and relationships. The pilot also starred Drew Tarver, Nick D'Agosto, and The Office alum Anders Holm, who was cast as Sally’s soon-to-be ex-husband. Despite the excitement around the project, the pilot never made it to air. CBS ultimately passed on picking up the series, citing creative differences. Reports suggest that the network requested reshoots, but the producers and cast declined. As a result, How I Met Your Dad was shelved, and the idea of a female-led spin on the HIMYM legacy remained unrealized at that time. Fans were left disappointed, especially given Gerwig’s rising star at the time. While the pilot had its flaws, many were curious about the different dynamic it could have brought to the HIMYM universe. Years later, in 2022, the concept was revived in How I Met Your Father, starring Hilary Duff, finally giving the concept another chance, though with a different cast and storyline.
