Warren Scheenen :
a lot of people mistakenly blame static electricity when it's embers coming off the turbo and exhaust manifold starting fires, especially in sunflower 😬

Even if it does nothing you always have a spare chain under the combine

We’ve dragged chains for years and found it works better connected to the frame and not the back axle. The back axle has a greased pivot point that insulates it from the whole combine frame. My .02c

we started back when the John Deere 70series came out . 08 I believe. Deere sold 6 new combines that year ours and 1 other were the only ones that didn't burn up. or have a fire

It definitely helps keep the static electricity down, keeps them cleaner in dusty conditions and also helps prevent potential fires

We put our static chains on the feeder house so it doesn’t drag when going down the road. We’ve seen sparks from hitting rocks start grass fires in the ditch.

Have you ever driven behind a fireman implement, dragging a chain like that after dark? The sparks could be very dangerous.

I just keep my old combine clean as possible using compressed air every where including engine area. Power wash between crops or if necessary. Just trying to eliminate fire hazards

Drag chains underneath the feeder house works best a fair bit down in aus here but can’t avoid all the fires I suppose

Been doing it for years, if absolutely nothing else we think it maybe keeps the windows a lil less dusty!

Get the static bar , I easily get five years out of mine if not longer you just have to remember to pick it up and not drag it down the road

We’ve got in Australia something called a tornado, it’s a hydraulic run fan like on a seeder that you can run ducted air around the machine to try and stop dust built up on danger spots on the machine

For static fires, use 2 cables or 2 roller chains on the machine. 2 cables or 2 roller chains on the header. Do not use log chain. We have not had any static fires since we installed the ground chains

Stainless chain or wire rope? It tends to work harden with abrasion so maybe it would last longer? That or you could drag an old hardened bucket tooth or something similar.
