I’ll never discourage creativity in the gym if there’s logical intent. Pressing on top of a foam roller to “increase the stretch” misses the mark (in my opinion) because it sacrifices a highly important variable (stability/appropriate anchoring) for a less important one (muscle length). You can’t train muscles at longer lengths substantially without appropriate stability first. For those that will ask, using a half-moon foam roller creates similar downsides but to a lesser degree. The half-moon foam roller will be more stable than the regular foam roller, but both are likely less stable than simply using a bench or the back pad on a machine. Using machines (compared to DBs) will likely limit some of the stability downsides to the roller, but in most cases, I’d advise using the standard pad to do presses and flyes. The direction of resistance will also play a role in how much stability you need behind your back, so if you perform cable flyes with the cable origins out toward your sides, this distinction likely won’t matter as much as compared to free weight or machine press.
