Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about empathy. About kindness. About what it means to really care for people, not just the ones who look like us or believe the same things…but all people. I live in Los Angeles. This is a city full of immigrants. Full of families. Full of life. It’s an amazing city. We share meals, we ride buses together, we go to baseball games. There was no crisis here until one was forced upon us. Don’t believe what you are seeing on TV. This city looks like any other right now and has all along. Those protests are happening on a few streets downtown and some other small areas with people protesting the harshness of how this ICE stuff is going down. They are not taking criminals. They are taking families and hard working people. Watching videos of peaceful people being trampled by horses, tear gassed, hit for simply showing up, it's devastating. And it’s not fiction. It’s not “hype.” It’s happening in my city. On our streets. I’ve seen how compassionate this city really is. How strangers protect one another. How people show up, for dignity, for justice, for families just trying to live in peace. And yet… empathy is now seen as weakness? As a problem? When did caring about others become something to mock? I’m not religious. But I believe in the sacredness of empathy. I believe in caring without expecting anything in return. I believe that love, real, radical love, is the only way through any of this. You don’t have to agree with everything. But imagine, for just a moment, what it would feel like to be separated from your child. To be hunted in your own neighborhood. Imagine it happening to you. If that doesn’t stir something in you… I don’t know what will. Empathy isn’t weakness. It’s our greatest strength. And I’d rather feel deeply, every day, than ever stop caring.
