I had a friend whose family would pay me to pet/house-sit for them occasionally. Their pets were spoiled to high heaven but by god I followed every instruction. I cooked the unseasoned steak strips, I set out the puréed ham for the cat, I refilled the bird feeders, I let the dog sleep in the bed with me. And I don’t even like dogs that much. So her dad’s behavior makes NO SENSE to me.

This happened to me minus the coyotes. My brother (in his 40s) promised to take care of my cat on vacation. He neglected the cat, lied, and I came home to her dead in the dining room. Traumatizing.

They have the opposite of anxiety. They think we are overreacting and it's scary because they'll go out of their way to "prove their point" and sometimes, it has devasting concequences :(

My parents were the same when my dog was going blind from an infection in his eyes. I gave them instructions told them he needed his meds at these times. They didn’t care until he went fully blind.
