I think the difference is autonomy. Nurse need mother may I. Critical thinking isn’t part of the care plan to roll a patient. Doctor puts in orders

This is the way I look at it. Medics are in the stuck and get the first touch. Yes we are able to do “more” critical interventions I.e what the hospital does in the first 45 minutes. Nurses have “more” stuff to do after those 45 minutes! Yes medic intubated, started a levo drip, etc. but nurses will have to maintain that and change stuff if something is simply not working. There is a difference in stabilizing, and getting someone to walk out!

What you said is true. Ppl are vastly misunderstanding what you’re saying

Pre hospital care vs hospital. Like asking why the mobile mechanic just got my truck running instead of fixing it back to factory specs.

The biggest difference in my opinion is medics have to do a lot more diagnosing with their eyes where RN’s have much more test results to help make a treatment plan.

I’m a paramedic and an ER nurse. Both jobs are different and they complement each other. But they are different. Both rely on physician orders. I have standing orders on the ambulance but can call

It's even different between ED RNs and in-patient - much like EMS we're concentrated on stabilizing the pt and ideally would transfer/discharge

I’m a Paramedic and a RN. There is some overlap but it’s a completely different tool box and critical thinking skills.

I hate this argument. These are two very different professions working in very different environments. Let’s all just respect each other for the difficult work we all do.

So well put. I work on the truck and in the ED as a float. So valuable to be able to work each role, and honestly I can’t choose one over the other! Each complements the other.

20 yr medic, last semester of nursing school here. You are right, absolutely different roles. My best advice to you as an ER RN is to just be mildly familiar with your local EMS protocols.

I have taught lots of nurses to intubate! Some are actually proficient at it.

I literally just don’t care anymore of who can do what. I’ll do what I can do in the field and the ED can continue the care. I just want every patient to get the best and complete care.

I think the difference is the extra stuff paramedics can do it way cooler than the extra stuff nurses do. It’s an ER nurse but I am way jealous of the shit EMS does.

flight medic and er/icu nurse. one is skills based one is care based. medics do immediate life saving intervention. nurses do chronic care and have physicians bedside to do life saving intervention.
