FREAKY PITS!!! Swipe for an INSANE journey in Death Valley Couple weeks back, Tom Jones (legendary canyon guy), told me about Swaney fest. I went, and asked around camp on what I could run. I was planning on Styx, but somehow landed a run with the ULTIMATE legend, Scott Swaney. There is a documentary on him called first descent. 25 years ago, Death Valley only had 12 established canyon routes. Because of him and one other person, he has been the first to descend over 410 canyons in that time. He has hundreds more planned I never needed to see the artists palette with this run, we effectively saw every layer and more. The approach up, as Death Valley goes, we went up a gulley that wasn’t ascended before, the high incline and scree was insane. One part I just had to dig my leg into the mountain as the cliff was falling apart in front of me, so I was sliding down while trying to make it to that ridge. Very intense climbing for me. Second pic in the rocks u can see the scree coming down, very unstable rock at near vertical incline At the top, it’s untouched. Black and red rocks from lava flows (basin and range formations cause this). We proceeded to descend with 11 rappels, some over 100 ft, and one two stage that’s 180 ft. U can’t even see the top really from the bottom, it’s that big!! Rappel after rappel using marginal cairn anchors- standard for Death Valley, but they are “fragile” so u must depend on ur life to be careful We left a 200 ft rope after pulling the rope (no way up). We had to get creative with the ropes we had for the 180 ft including tying webbing to the pull side..Saw a group get lost early on and while we waited to see if we could find them, Scott demonstrated building a cairn anchor, that can be ghosted, aka no webbing or anything. He invented this method, with the fiddle stick. I was the meat anchor backup..which means since it’s a marginal anchor, if it blows, there’s only a few seconds I would be dragged down for ppl to jump on me or….mist… We waited awhile for them, and thankfully as canyon ppl do, they brought the rope down, saw our notes, and it was recovered that day! #fursuit #canyoneering #furry
