Newton’s 3rd law tells us that for every action we create, there’s an equal-and-opposite reaction we’ll need to deal with. Understanding this is crucial to understanding how we can make exercises that are more precise for a given goal. In the context of a hanging leg raise, when you start to move your legs forward/upward, your entire body will be pushed backward. This is “good” in that it challenges the abs and hip flexors, but undesirable in how it forces us to have to manage everything from the hips upward (with muscles on the back side of the spine). This “counter force” will thus encourage motion unrelated to the challenging the target tissues and, in this case, make it more difficult to stress the abs and hip flexors because of the unwanted motion that the counter force creates. In simpler terms: if you don’t put something behind your spine, your body will swing backward and you’ll end up having to deal with balancing yourself below the bar with non-target tissues instead of just being able to raise your legs. Balancing yourself below the bar does not contribute to stressing the abs (the target tissue) and makes it more difficult to create force in the forward direction with the legs. So, in essence, “cancelling” this force out with a brace behind the back is a great way to be more precise and effective relative to the goal of the exercise (to train the abs and hip flexors). If your goal is different from this, you might want to reconsider why you’re doing the exercise to begin with.
