Usually your first year's of homesteading/farming, you'll loose money. After you get established and set, then you can start making a profit after you find your market. It's definitely a "spend money to make money" investment.

pretty sure the definition of homestead is that you are self sufficient, or close to... not to earn a wage to turn profit...

You homestead to save money on expensive processed food and Rx. You can trade or sell what’s on your homestead to put a little cash in your pocket but you won’t be rich. Full & healthy yes.

IT depends on the eyes of the IRS- if you Plan on being a Business and EARNING money? if Yes then you get the Ag Tax Breaks.
